Male Cardinal on the Feeder

Male Cardinal Feeding_edited-1_wm

It’s always great when I can catch one bird on the Feeder at a time – particularly a handsome Cardinal.

This gentleman decided to claim the Feeder for a spell the other day.

Birds at the Feeder New Year’s Day

Birds at the Feeder New Years Day_edited-3_wm

I shot this image yesterday.  There were only a couple birds at the feeder.  Two Male Cardinals and one Junco.  A bit of the ole, De Ment, luck.  I just happened to hit the shutter as one of the Cardinals was in motion.  The other Cardinal is almost hidden by the dark of the window and the Junco looks on from the upper right. I have a good many images to load over the next few days.

Male Cardinal in Study

In January 2014 I posted this image and thought it would be a good way to finish out 2017 – many of you really enjoyed his peaceful posture and apparent disregard for the winter weather.

I took this image a couple of years ago.  Did a bit of work in Aviary to sharpenen it best I could.  It’s still a bit fuzzy looking due to falling snow.

Male, American Gold Finch, picking seeds from a Cone Plant

Male Gold Finch picking seeds from a Cone Plant_edited-1_wm

This handsome little fella was very busy a few mornings ago. He was moving from plant to plant and I was lucky to catch him before he moved again.  Actually, it seems a bit early for Finches to be feeding on Cone Plants.  We generally don’t see them until the fall.  But, this plant got his attention.

I  captured this  Male Gold Finch the other morning as he rested and checked the area before continuing to feed.  Gold Finches are always cautious and alert.

A heads up on, “Finches.”

I noticed earlier today, both male and female Finches are beginning to feed on Cone Plant seeds. “They love the Seeds.”   So, if you live in the Midwest, and love to shoot Finches, get your camera ready.  They really are a great subject and usually spend time on the plants. They are very cautious, however, so the best way to capture them is to be sitting somewhat near the plants  –  not to close –  so they’ll get use to your presence and start feeding.  I’ve got a 75-300 zoom that works well in these situations. I also have a Point and Shoot that takes excellent images.  Whatever you’ve got that works well for you will do the job.
